Advanced Math:
Students will begin to go through the next chapter understanding how to use the order of operations, and evaluate expressions with or without exponents. The students will also be looking at how to identify equivalent expressions and how to simplify expressions. All of these topics will begin the basics of their understanding of algebra.
Math:
Students will be working on how to multiply by tens, hundreds, and thousands and how this changes a basic number. Students will also be looking at how this is changed when multiplying a number by less than 1 such as one-tenth, one-hundredth, and one-thousandth.
Science:
Students will begin to discuss the basics of biomes and how each biome has distinct characteristics. The assessment for this unit will be a project with students collaborating for a presentation on a specific biome. More information will be coming home with your child.
Achieve 3000:
Students will be continuing their work on vocabulary and non-fiction text structures. We will be directly looking at reading articles to help refresh what we have already worked on and continue this work to help us prepare for our MAPS testing.

Language Arts:
We will be starting a new read aloud called The Fighting Ground. As historical fiction, it will give students more background as we learn about the American Revolution in Social Studies. Along with the book, students will practice the skill of summarizing and identifying unfamiliar vocabulary. Students will have a new weekly assignment to practice fluency and decoding by doing one-minute-reads at home. Please help your child by listening to him or her read and give advice accordingly.
Social Studies:
The class will take the next two weeks to run through a colonization simulation. Students will be a part of colonies and make decisions on packing for the New World, sailing, choosing land, assigning men for hunting, farming, and fishing, and interact with the native populations. The goal of this simulation is to grow the colony by increasing colonists, food units, and overall wealth units.
Writing:
Students will be asked to complete a final assessment for narrative writing this week. We will review the elements of great narratives before completing the 45 minute writing prompt. From here, we will be moving into argument-based argument essays.
