Arts
We will be doing The Fighting Ground as our read-aloud focusing on vocabulary, inferencing, and summarizing. Book clubs will be restarting this week. Groups will work together to determine pages for each week as well as discussion question posts. Fluency homework will be coming home, due Monday. Weekly Moby lesson due Friday.
Writing
Students will be starting our new writing unit on the research-based argument essay. The unit will start with a pre-assessment where students will choose a topic or issue they feel strongly about to share their opinions and evidence. They will demonstrate their knowledge of persuasive writing before we begin. From here, in our first lessons we will learn how to gather information about both sides of a topic and then do a flash draft for the topic.
Social Studies
We will continue the colonization simulation this week. Students have completed packing cargo, setting sail, and their colonists have just landed. From here, the colonies will get set up and begin hunting, farming, and fishing. As time allows, we may also interact with the native populations. Students will be responsible for journal entries documenting their colony’s progress.

Resource
Language Arts:
This past week, students did a great job of reading with expression as they performed the Readers Theatre piece titled TOWN HALL. They also learned some new spelling and vocabulary words and were tested on those. Next week, they will be reading the story WHERE ON EARTH IS MY BAGEL? and will be completing a cause and effect sheet based on events in the story.
Resource Writing:
Students have been practicing using more descriptive words/adjectives in their writing. They drafted narratives about a picture and printed them after they were edited. They will soon be learning to use more transition words to connect their ideas as they write.
