What’s Happening in Class:
Mrs. Sharman
Resource LA-
Students will get another spelling list on Monday and are expected to study their words every night. We will be focusing on the skills of drawing conclusions and identifying the setting of a story and how it helps us to comprehend what is taking place in the story. In addition, students will get a new vocabulary list on Monday they will need to review throughout the week in order to better comprehend the story we will be reading called, “Annie’s Gifts,” which will be in their iBooks on their iPad. Just a reminder to have your student either working on Lexia or Reading Plus every night for at least 15 minutes!
Resource Writing-
We will continue with writing a rough draft of our narrative of our favorite place. Then we will learn how to edit and revise our writing in order for it to come alive to our readers. Students will also be adding more ideas to their composition notebooks to help generate their narrative writing.
Mrs. Brenner
Advanced Math-
This week, students will continue to focus on linked values in linked ratio tables and then move into understanding proportions – how to solve them and what they represent. We have continued our discussion on unit rates. We will be having a quiz on Thursday for the sections 8-11. Next week we will be having our first test.
Co-taught Math-
Students will continue with their flexible groups this week. We will focus on converting fractions, adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators, and working with mixed numbers. REMEMBER: every student is responsible for getting in 60 minutes of MOBY MAX Math every week! Also, students are expected to pass their addition factmaster wtih 100% by October 8th.
Science-
We are continuing our discussion of how populations are impacted by humans and natural causes. We are also beginning to develop our science vocabulary and using science vocabulary in our daily discussions. You can ask your child to see their vocabulary cards and can review them. We are also working on developing short answer responses after reading science non-fiction. We will be starting an experiment on what can happen to turtle populations hopefully by the end of this week.
Achieve 3000-
Students are continuing to work on reading the non-fiction articles while developing vocabulary. Through the use of the vocabulary development, students are making predictions on what the words mean using the context clues and coming up with antonyms and synonyms. This week’s article is Birds Welcome Home and the other article will be a student choice article.
Ms. Utech:
Language Arts
Our focus skill this week will be on identifying conflict and resolution within stories. I will also challenge students to look deeper into characters to identify their personality traits and motives for their actions. We will be starting a read aloud called Bridge to Terabithia as a way to start each class. With the read
aloud I will model and students will practice reading strategies such as
predicting, connecting, summarizing, asking questions, etc. Book clubs
will read their Week Three pages and answer their discussion post by Friday.
Word study packets will be due on Thursday.

Writing
Last week students started narratives, practicing precise details. This week we will continue to work on the narrative piece, taking time to identify and share the places where we did the best job of showing not telling by giving details that describe the 5 senses. Lessons this week will focus on using great writing to model and inspire great writing. Students will also look over their work and use narrative rubrics to self-assess their stories and set goals for how to make their writing better.
Social Studies
This will be our last week working on basic map skills. We will have a quick quiz on Friday where students are expected to know the continents, oceans, and vocabulary identified on the Quizlet shared in Schoology. We will also practice directions and using latitude and longitude to find places on a map. This standard is taught but not assessed in Powerschool.
