Lesson Updates:

Language Arts:
This week students will be finishing nonfiction text structure paragraphs.  Students are expected to create a minimum of three paragraphs on a topic of their choice including compare/contrast, sequence, and descriptive.  As a challenge, they can also include problem/solution and cause/effect.  For each text structure, students will create a clear graphic organizer, a solid topic sentence, clear sentences to explain their information also using transition words to help readers identify each text structure, as well as a concluding thought.  These organizers and paragraphs will be used for scoring student knowledge of applying text structure.  Because students will be assigned to finish high-quality paragraphs as homework, I will not be assigning active reading.  However, a MobyMax stories lesson will still be due by Friday.

Writing:
Student will be creating final drafts for their winter memories this week.  We will be working through the editing and revising process to make them the best they can be using all the strategies we’ve learned so far.  Students will also be doing some partner work with various peers throughout the week.  I will be instructing on how to collaborate effectively giving both “glows and grows” to encourage fresh eyes to help one another find places to improve our writing.

Social Studies:
We are continuing to study the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies.  We have been focusing on the religious or political reasons colonies were started and the important people who influenced their formation and success.  We will finish the unit and test before break.  Study guide will go home Monday or Tuesday depending on which day students have SS.

Resource Language Arts:
Students will be discussing different story elements found in Children's Literature.  We will be paying attention to the characters, setting, plot, and theme.  They will even create a new ending to THE GINGERBREAD MAN.

Resource Writing:
Students will continue to compare and contrast as they write about two objects.  This will be good practice for making decisions about various things now and in the future.

Advanced Math:
This week, most students are completing their decimals self-paced on Monday.  Many students have already started their fractions unit.  This will be completed prior to our break.

Achieve 3000:
We continue to work on answering specific questions using the informational text as well as analyzing what we have read to help it make sense.

Science:
We are continuing to finish up Cycles of Matter.  We will have a test on it next week Monday.
