- Lineville will be sponsoring a supply drive for Happily Ever After. Students may choose to bring in donations the week of October 12-16. Below you can find a list of suggestions. Lessons
2nd Hour Math
We will finish up unit 1 on fractions, review for the test and your student will have their first math test mid to late this week. Please look for review sheets coming home to help them practice!
Resource LA
Students will focus on reading non-fiction text this week and we will read the story called, “Ah, Music!". Our skill this week will be drawing out explicit details from the text to support a main idea. Students got their new list of vocabulary words on Friday and should be reviewing them nightly in addition to their spelling words. Also, don’t forget that you should be doing at least 10 units of Lexia per week or if you’re on Reading Plus you should be doing 2 Eye Balances, 2 See Readers, and 2 Read Arounds to help your reading soar!
Resource Writing
We will focus on revising our narratives and the message we want to convey to our readers.We will focus on how to become even better writers through setting goals and will choose a narrative that we want to revise and publish.
Advanced Math
This week we will be finishing up Unit 1 by having a test on Monday. The remainder of the week will be spent starting Unit 2 Area of Polygons. During this week, we will be identifying how to solve for the area of triangles, squares/rectangles, and parallelograms as well as finding the perimeters of these shapes. We will be discussing the differences between both perimeter and area and how you will use them differently in the real world. Discuss how you would use area to help you figure out how much paint to purchase for a room or using perimeter to help you decide how much baseboard you would need to install trim for a room. Having these conversations with your child will continue the learning outside of the classroom.
Achieve 3000
This week will be focusing on endangered animals to help tie into our science discussion. The first one will be Save the Rhinos? an article that discusses how do you save the only five remaining Northern rhinos. The second article is called Stealing Zoo Animals and how the dangers of animals being removed from their zoo habitats and handlers do not offer the animals the best survivability in the “real world”. We will be continuing our use of vocabulary and being able to use the text to answer short answer questions.
Science
In Science, we are starting to look at how living things interact. We will begin by discussing camouflage and how animals adapt to their surroundings. We will also take into account what adaptations living things use to increase their survivability.
Language Arts
Our focus skill this week will be identifying theme or underlying message within a story. Finding theme requires inferencing skills to look deeper into characters and how they solve their problems. We will look into character actions to determine their character qualities and motives. All of this will require students to tap into higher level thinking skills to get to the deeper meaning the author is trying to convey. Because this will take quite a bit of practice to conquer, this will be our main focus skill for several weeks. Theme is a standard that will be assessed for first quarter. Book clubs will finish their books this week and answer a final post responding to how the author ended their story. Word study packets this week will focus on suffixes.
Writing
A goal again this week will be to have students get more stories recorded in their notebooks! Some students are struggling with story ideas. The program will later ask students to work to develop stories further into publishable work, so we need several seed stories to work from. One assignment will be to ask parents to help list seed ideas that students could develop into stories. These ideas can simply be small moments in life where the child has learned a lesson or realized something. Please help your child at home to come up with possible ideas. We will practice the strategy of flash drafting, writing fast and furiously to capture the experience on the page. From here, students will look at revising drafts of their work to better help readers identify the theme, lesson, or deeper meaning within the story.
Social Studies
This week students will learn the three major motivations for exploring. We will then use these to identify motivations as we read about specific explorers. We will start by studying Columbus. One of our ELA standards asks students to analyze multiples accounts of the same event or topic noting important similarities and differences in the point of view they represent. Students will read from several resources, watch videos, and listen to a picture book called Encounter to learn about Columbus. Student will be asked to compare and contrast the information from various sources to draw conclusions about this explorer.
